Buffalo

â€Å"I need to be in Buffalo when the world ends.† I look up from the magazine I’ve been flipping through and take a gander at my companion with wariness. Feigning exacerbation as though the thinking behind her unusual explanation is evident to everybody aside from me, she clarifies, â€Å"Because it’s constantly ten years behind wherever else.† Generally, she’s right. Wild ox is once in a while on the bleeding edge of anything. At the point when pink a major trend dark, ladies dressed in Buffalo were all the while brandishing dim. At the point when Pacific Rim was extremely popular, we kept on review the corner takeout as valid Asian food. Disregard Mini Coopers, aren’t Chevy Suburbans still thought to be tasteful? Albeit one may think Buffalonians would have a feeling of inadequacy about our not exactly cosmopolitan picture, we really revel in our common ways. We grasp the way that we are the home of the chicken wing, kazoo, and hot seat, and the city whose football crew nearly won the Super Bowl multiple times. We are not afraid to be the origination of America’s most forgettable president, Millard Fillmore, and the host of â€Å"Howdy Doody,† Buffalo Bob Smith. Now, you may be considering how any self-regarding individual could be pleased to live in a city whose significant specialties are an oily winged animal extremity and having snow seven months of the year. So as to comprehend our pride, you need to understand that Buffalo’s in reverse nature is the thing that makes it so engaging the individuals who live here. It doesn’t matter that we’re not vanguard. Rather, we’ve held the sort of solid, strong network where individuals pay special mind to one another which doesn’t regularly exist in urban areas. On my road, for example, neighbors welcome each other by name, kids play outside solo, and our road affiliation cooperates to keep the blockattractive. One road over is the Elmwood Strip, where autonomously possessed shops, eateries, bistros, and the neighborhood library can be found. I never â€Å"walk the strip† without running into at any rate two individuals I know. I have a sense of security, at home, and part of the network. At the point when an October storm dumped three feet of snow on Buffalo, a large portion of the city was left without power or telephone administration, and the vast majority of our trees were crushed. Flotsam and jetsam was all over the place, numerous streets were blocked, and schools and organizations were shut for longer than seven days. Grown-ups and youngsters joined together to clear fallen branches, give suppers, and considerably offer their own homes to those out of luck. One of my neighbors, who has two babies, was without force or warmth, yet quickly got a neighbor’s generator, arranged suppers, and had her carport and front walk cleared by neighborhood men inside hours. In spite of our difficulty, or maybe as a result of it, Buffalonians are pleased with what our identity is: steadfast, liberal, sympathetic, and clever individuals connected by a typical association with one another. There aren’t numerous spots where a whole network of volunteers contributes to reestablish a recreation center framework to its unique wonder or, in spite of the city’s liquidation, secretly raises $70 million to remodel a Frank Lloyd Wright perfect work of art. Some give secretly, similar to little league vegetable vendor and beginner stock financial specialist Walt Kaminski, who unobtrusively parted with millions lastly uncovered his inheritance of help by leaving 8,000,000 dollars to neighborhood good cause when he passed on as of late. Others contribute on their own level. My granddad realized all the homeless people by name from passing them on his stroll to work. Once, he exchanged his fleece coat for a destitute man’s worn out one just to ensure this glad however down-on-his-karma fellow had something warm to wear. The last time I went with my father to see our specialist, Nelson, I saw him denying installment from a gathering of abandoned Middle Eastern understudies whose vehicle he had fixed in light of the fact that, he stated, â€Å"I realize they would do likewise for my kids.† Experiencing childhood in Buffalo has molded me in significant ways, imparting in me benevolence, liberality, strength, trustworthiness, realness, and a solid commitment to network. We Buffalonians may not be at the bleeding edge of style, workmanship, music or food, however we’re the sort of individuals you can rely upon. Along these lines, whenever you hear the notorious cease from â€Å"A Chorus Line† that claims â€Å"to end it all in Buffalo is redundant,† you can put any misinformation to rest.

The ABCs of Saving

The ABCs of Saving The ABCs of Saving The ABCs of Saving26 alphabetical  tips for cutting your costs and building up your savings!  Building up your savings isn’t always easy, especially if you’ve never tried to do it before. But it’s very important, as it might be the only way to build up your credit and protect yourself from the worst consequences of a surprise financial emergency, like predatory no credit check loans. That’s why we spoke to the experts to create 26 saving tips, one for each letter of the English alphabet. We considered a tip for every character in the Mandarin dictionary, but we ran out of Internet.A is for AppsLiving in the future means we don’t have to rely on abacuses or bark with numbers written on it to manage our savings anymore. We have apps and computers with numbers written on them!“One of my favorite savings tools is Digit.co, which analyzes your bank account and spending patterns,” Chad Parks, CEO of Ubiquity Retirement + Savings  told us. “The software looks at your daily ch ecking account balance, learns your spending habits and automatically moves small funds to your Digit account to increase savings. The amounts vary depending on your checking balance and spending habits for that day/week/month. I notice they tend to pull smaller amounts between $5 and 10.”In fact, Digit is one of the apps included in our ever-expanding app database. We’ve got a whole category of apps just for building your savings, so you should really give that a look.B is for BudgetBefore you start saving money, it’s important to figure out how much you’re actually spending and where it’s going.“Top advice I give for new savers is knowledge,” advised John Savin, owner of Savin Wealth Management. “The simple concept of money in vs. money out will give monetary clarity. A budget listing where you spend will expose the holes in your finances, so you can lean up, and put more money back in your pocket. Cable, happy hours, dining out, throwing out groceries, shopping sp rees, pet outfits, etc are all areas to give a hard look at and trim back. Youd be shocked at how many thousands a year you can free up to save.”Lucky for you, we’ve also got a section for budgeting apps in our database.C is for Cutting backOnce you’ve made your budget, it’s time to figure out where you can start shrinking it. One of the most obvious places to look is food, but we’ll cover that when we get to F and L. Coffee is another big place you can cut back. Obviously making your own is better than buying, but if you don’t have time to make your own, you can still be a smart saver at the coffee shop. You might like your latte, but getting a black coffee and adding the sugar and milk yourself can save you a few bucks each day which will add up quick. And it turns out a screen saver isn’t just something that appears on your computer screen. It’s also something you can be!“Cut the cord on your streaming sites’ bill,” advised Deborah Sweeney, CEO of MyCorporat ion.com. “You probably don’t need (or have enough time to watch) Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO GO, and Hulu every month.”D is for Deals“Look for sales, deals, and coupons,” suggested Amber Westover, digital marketing strategist for BestCompany.com. “Then, contribute the money you saved to your savings account.”And when it comes to finding deals, there’s an app (category in our directory) for that!E is for Earn rewards (from properly using credit cards)A lot of people think that credit cards keep you from properly building your savings. But if used correctly, credit cards can help build up your credit score as well as your savings. One way is by building up your rewards. Many credit cards earn you points every time you use them, and then you can use those points to purchase things you would have had to spend money on otherwise. Of course, you should still be paying your entire bill on time each month and you shouldn’t make purchases just to earn points. But if it’s s omething you were going to purchase anyway, the points will let you save in the future.Bestselling author Pamela Yellen offered some outside-the-box advice on how to use your credit cards wisely: “Some financial advisors tell you to leave your cards at home to avoid temptation…I prefer to wrap my cards in my goals. Every time I take a card out, I see a picture or some words that represent a goal thats important to me. I get the opportunity to stop and decide whether what Im about to purchase is more important than that goal.”F is for FoodEating out may be delicious, but it adds up fast. As Sweeney told us, “Do not go out to eat for lunch. Instead, plan your lunch in advance using weekly meal prep plans or by putting aside a little extra dinner for lunch the night before.”We’ve even got an post on meal planning to help you get started.G is for GrowthGrowing your savings takes time and dedication, but the rewards will be worth it. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. It’s ab out making the right choices, over and over again, day after day, month after month, year after year. But the more you do it, the more your savings will grow, and the more you’ll grow as a saver.Yellen gave us an example of how learning about your own spending habits can keep you making the right choices going forward: “Do you feel driven to buy extravagant gifts? When you have a rough day at work, do you crave some retail therapy to feel better? Are you triggered to overspend in a bookstore, hardware store, or swap meet? ‘Know thyself’ â€" and especially know your spending triggers so you can outwit them.”H is for “Happies”Spending makes you happy in the short term. But proper saving can make you happy in the long term.“The Big Happy for most of us is having memorable experiences and being with the people we love,” Yellen advised. “That other stuff we chase? Thats usually Little Happy â€" fleeting and not very fulfilling.”I is for InterestThe interest you get from savings accounts may not be much, but every bit counts. And you’ll want to keep an eye on your credit score, because if it’s too low and you end up with a financial emergency, the interest from the loan you take out may wipe out whatever savings you had started building (if the emergency hasn’t done it already).J is for Joint accountDo you and your significant other share an account? You’re going to have to both be on board or else the saving plan won’t work. Talking to your loved one about finances can be awkward, but thankfully we’ve covered the subject before, so you can read up before you talk it over.K is for Keep up with your bills“Pay your bills on time,” Sweeney warned. “By doing this, you can avoid penalties and interest â€" all of which accumulate if you don’t pay on time or don’t pay in full.”And paying your bills on time consistently will also help your credit score, which, as we mentioned above, will keep your savings from being totally wipe d out by interest if you ever need a loan.L is for Learn to cookWe already mentioned meal planning, but if you don’t know how to cook, you’ll probably need to work on that. But don’t just take our word for it. Here’s what Sweeney said: “Learn to cook! Start making meals at home with the help of budget-friendly food blogs to help save money on eating out each week.M is for Making comparisonsSometimes putting in a little more legwork can lead to more savings, especially when it comes to bigger purchases. “Rather than falling for some marketers value comparison, how about setting up your own?” suggested Yellen. “Put a price tag on some things you really enjoy and value.”N is for NeedsSaving money means sometimes you can only purchase what you really need. As Yellen told us: “What do we really need? Stop and think about it and get clarity for yourself. And if you have children, teaching them the difference between needs and wants will empower them for life.”O is for Open multiple accountsOne way to keep yourself from dipping into your savings account too soon is to make it harder to dip into.“Use a different financial institution for your checking and savings accounts,” advised Westover. “If your savings account is more difficult to access (you have to wait a few business days for money to transfer to your checking account) you are less likely to make lavish impulse purchases. A built-in wait period will help you make premeditated financial choices. In addition, the ‘out of sight, out of mind’ principle will help you build savings. Make all regular purchases from your checking account and keep your savings account off limits.P is for Picking your purchasesWe’ve already said this a few different ways, but it’s important enough to be said again: you’ll have to put some thought into your purchases. Small, mindless purchases can start to add up quickly, so it’s important you think carefully about everything you’re spending mone y on.Q is for QuotesHave a repair you know you’ll need to have made on your house or car? Be sure to get multiple quotes so you can compare and find the best one. Obviously, if it’s an emergency you may not have much time, but if you can afford the time to find the more affordable option, your savings will thank you.R is for Recurring expensesStuff like rent, electricity, gas, train fees, and any other regular, non-negotiable expense can be a real dig into your savings. That’s why it’s always a good idea to find ways you can save on these sorts of expenses, whether it’s shopping around for a cheaper electricity provider, or changing your internet package.S is for SavingIt’s what this whole list is about!T is for TransferSetting up an automatic transfer into your savings account each month is a great way to guarantee money is getting put in there.“Pay yourself first and set-up an automatic transfer between your bank account to a separate savings account or investment ac count to save before you even have time to spend that money,” advised the couple behind OurFinancialPath.com. “You can start small and gradually increase your savings rate. The important part is to start.”Westover also suggested an automatic transfer and used her own experience as an example: “The secret to saving is automation. Making the saving process easy and simple is the best way to be successful long-term. Schedule recurring automatic transfers, many banks include this feature. You can schedule transfers weekly, monthly, or even on a specific day of the month. I schedule savings transfers for the day after I receive my paycheck. Once the money is gone there is less temptation to spend it.”U is for Unexpected expensesUnexpected expenses will always come up. But if you have your savings built up, you’ll have a cushion you can work with when the worst happens. Ideally, you could have an emergency fund in addition to your savings fund so you don’t have to dip into y our savings if something bad happens, but we know for many people building up any savings at all can be difficult.V is for VacationA vacation is one of the many possible rewards diligent saving can reap.W is for WantsAs we mentioned earlier, you have to separate your purchases into wants and needs. No one reasonable would expect you to give up all of your “wants,” but cutting them down can be a great step for raising your savings and can make the “wants” you still do get all the sweeter.X is for XylophoneUnless you’re a professional xylophone player, a xylophone is likely a want, rather than a need, so keep that in mind.Y is for YearsBuild up your saving habits over many years. Your future self will thank you for it.Z is for ZoosMany zoos are either free or have free or discount days. It could be a good activity to do without negatively affecting your savings! With all of these tips and your own dedication, we know you’ll become a savings master in no time! What are some w ays youve cut spending and made saving easier? Roman Architecture - 1056 Words

The White House, The Capitol Building, The Lincoln Memorial, all these things have been affected by ancient Roman architecture. This ancient Roman architecture came to be around the time period of the Pax Romana in the Roman Empire. It was a time of great wealth and prosperity for the empire which brought it into a time of a sort of golden age for architecture. This type of architecture was influenced by the ancient Greeks, but it took their ideas and transformed them to better advantage their own empire. These ideas and works are still being used today in our society in some of the most influential buildings of our time. These structures helped define the romans and the structures they created during their time period. The Roman Empire was one of the first to create massive amounts of roads that connected one end of the empire to the other. Their first and primary reason for the building of these roads was to transport their armies quickly across massive distances. Overtime, these roads were first created with gravel and dirt, but as technology improved so did the roads that they could build. They began to build them with stone and they cambered for drainage which meant that the roads didn’t need to be maintained as often. These roads manufactured a more complex and dynamic economy that increased the wealth that flowed within the empire. This is one of the first times in documented in history that people, in large numbers, used roads to establish their power over a wide range of land. The use of roads by the Romans was recreated by almost every empire and republic that followed them because of the immense amounts of success that the Romans had with it. The Romans used the arches to create structures called aqueducts. These aqueducts combined a series of arches one after the other and extended them on for mile after mile. For example, in ACHE’s preamble of The Code of Ethics it states, â€Å"In fulfilling their commitments and obligations to patients or others served, healthcare executives function as moral advocates and models. † Imagine, when a healthcare administrator recites these few words, he cannot help but acknowledge the depth of his commitment and the high level of morality that is expected from him. Because of the vast number of complex ethical dilemmas that arise, ACHE further promotes the value and importance of strong ethical decision making in ACHE’s Ethics Toolkit. â€Å"When the ethical guidelines are not enough, when there is uncertainty about the proper ethical approach, and when there is a need to develop additional ethical guidelines. ACHE’s Ethics Toolkit provides tools for developing both parts of an ethical culture. † (American College of Healthcare Executives, n. d. ). Influence of Individual Ethics on Decision Making. When it comes to the modern decisions in today’s healthcare system, it is important to be able to identify problems and opportunities and choose the best course of action for the greater good. A strong ethical background helps individuals make the right decision although it may be unpopular. â€Å"Aristotle (Summers, 2009) also teaches about morality when explains how to apply ethics to daily living. Through the idea of practical wisdom and eudemonia, he makes us aware of the need to apply ethics and behave in a moral way. We develop our moral character so that we use our knowledge of ethics to address challenging new situations. Ethical principles become the center of our lives and we apply them as virtue-centered administrators. † Strategies to Improve Decision Making in the Future The opportunities that being a member of The American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) has afforded healthcare professionals, is one that is here to stay. Healthcare administration is a profession that continually evolves with time. Because of the advances in medicine, people are living longer and have a better quality of life. The current self-assessment tools are quickly improving and making it easier for healthcare professionals to obtain the data needed to make prompt ethical decisions. It is important to remember that as a healthcare professional, one must present all of the facts to a patient and preserve his right of autonomy. It is within the code of ethics that healthcare professionals are not to impose their will on someone else. Remember, to carry out â€Å"the four ethical principles of autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice. † How to cite Ethical Self-Assessment, Papers

Terrorism in Political Protest

Terrorism can be defined as a premeditated, politically motivated violence directed against noncombatant targets, by sub-national groups to achieve political, economic or religious ends.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Terrorism in Political Protest specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More International terrorism can be considered as the one which involves citizens or a territory of more than one country (Cottle 34). In many instances, the aims of terrorists are similar to those of political groups whose views have to be dominant over those of their opponents. Terrorism is used to achieve progress within a short time than the pace in their current political atmosphere. It can also be said that terrorism is a more advanced stage of failed political process that starts with inequities and injustice. It moves from frustrated attempts of reform that breeds fear and temper, to confrontations related to politics that erupts in violence. They can be used to rationalize the use of any type of violence against any target (Sanders 95). Flashpoint (para.3) states that there are several forms of terrorism in existence. In urbanized countries, the traditional guerrilla warfare is mostly not appropriate. The reason behind is that rebels when attacked by superior forces cannot achieve and get hold of control over territory. In addition, they can not manage employing hit and run attacks effectively without having large losses. This resulted to formation of a new doctrine known as the urban guerrilla warfare which used terrorist tactics. In the 1990s a new form of international terrorism was formed. The group appeared to be less rational, not focused, deadly, and more international. This form of terrorism was known as Islamist Terrorism (Flashpoint para.4). An example of a recent terrorism attack is the one that happened in Southeast Asia in the year 2005. Since September 2001, the Australian prime minister had dra wn significant political progress. The political progress was a result of well-worn clichà © that changed the world on that tragic day (Club De Madrid para4). Force was needed to do away with the growing frustrations in politics, existential temper, and logistic ability for the hijackers to plan and implement the plots that had been evident for long. This was growing incrementally to anyone who was prepared to listen to the voices ignored from official avenues of political authority. The modern international politics took very little attention on the marginal voices (Club De Madrid para.8).Advertising Looking for essay on political sciences? Let's see if we can help you! Out of fearing antagonizing authoritarian regimes, Australian governments and diplomats cut their rela tionships with groups and individuals who were not from their regional political establishments (Club De Madrid, para.9). Taking advantage from the observations, a wider set of affairs which constituted formal and informal voices from the opposition reduced the distress which was as a result of attacks by terrorist in Bali after 11th September 2001. Club De Madrid asserts that the of effects of the attacks on September 11, and attacks at Bali which left many people dead was the beginning of a deep feeling of insecurity within Australian society (para.12). The conservative government of Howard preyed on public confusion that was caused by attacks on September 11 and the attacks at Bali. Their intention was to demonize seekers of asylums who came to Australia from Muslim countries (Club De Madrid, para.13). Works Cited Club De Madrid. Parts of a Thesis

Parts of a Thesis Parts of a Thesis Parts of a Thesis While writing parts of a thesis - be wary of questions. Rhetorical questions are often used in writing, but are much less common in theses, where an argument should be clearly stated, not hinted at by means of rhetorical questions. Sometimes, for stylistic purposes, you might choose to pose a question to engage the reader's interest. However, thesis examiners will usually expect you to give your own answer to raised question rather than leave it hanging for others to research. Use gender-neutral, dispassionate language. Avoid terms such as 'he' unless you are talking about a specific person. Such terms can usually easily be replaced with gender-neutral language, e.g. 'the manager', 'the researcher'. Similarly, demeaning and dismissive language should be avoided. For example, be careful of criticizing previous researchers in a dismissive or personal way. If your English thesis writing appears to be sexist or arrogant, you may alienate your thesis examiner. Worst of all, your examiner may be a friend of or even the author of work you criticized while writing a thesis.   They are unlikely to look sympathetically on criticism which does not appear to be well founded and objective. This does not mean that you should avoid pointing out gaps in previous literature or failings of previous studies in the course of your academic thesis writing. Master thesis must be well-written and properly formatted. While writing a thesis, always use the spell-check and grammar-check functions. Spelling and grammar checks are not substitutes for careful editing, but will rapidly identify many problems in your writing. Your instinctive last action before you print any document to give to your supervisor should always be a spell check. Failure to detect and remove misspelled words is a direct indicator is your inadequate attention to thesis writing. Gilligans Ethics of Care

Gilligan's Ethics of Care Psychologist Carol Gilligan is best known for her innovative but controversial ideas on the moral development of women. Gilligan emphasized what she called an â€Å"ethics of care† in womens moral reasoning. She placed her approach in direct opposition to Lawrence Kohlberg’s theory of moral development, which she claimed was biased against females and emphasized an â€Å"ethics of justice.† Key Takeaways: Gilligan's Ethics of Care Carol Gilligan believed women’s morality arose from real-life dilemmas, not hypothetical ones. She came up with three stages of moral development that emphasize an ethics of care.Pre-conventional stage: women are focused on the self.Conventional stage: women have come to focus on their responsibilities towards others. Post-conventional stage: a woman has learned to see herself and others as interdependent. Gilligan developed her thinking in response to the stages of moral development outlined by Lawrence Kohlberg, which Gilligan claimed were gender-biased and emphasized an ethics of justice. However, research by other scholars has shown that two moral orientations exist- one towards care and one towards justice. Origin of Gilligan’s Ethics of Care In 1967, a few years after receiving her Ph.D. from Harvard, Gilligan started a teaching position there. She also became a research assistant for Lawrence Kohlberg, who developed a popular theory of moral development. Gilligan’s work was a response to the gender bias she saw in Kohlberg’s approach.   Kohlberg’s theory of moral development included six stages. At its highest stage, an individual develops a deeply held, self-defined set of moral principles that one wishes to apply equally to all people. Kohlberg cautioned that not everyone would reach this sixth stage of moral development. In subsequent studies, he found that women tended to score at lower stages of moral development than men. However, Gilligan pointed out that the research Kohlberg did to develop his stage theory only included young white male participants. As a result, Gilligan argued that men werent morally superior to women. Instead, the reason women scored lower in Kohlberg’s stages than men was that Kohlberg’s work discounted the voices of women and girls. She outlined this position in detail in her seminal book In a Different Voice, which she published in 1982. Gilligan decided to study the development of moral reasoning in women herself and found that women thought about morality differently than men. Men, as exemplified by Kohlberg’s theory, tend to look at morality through a lens of rights, laws, and universally applied principles. This â€Å"ethics of justice† has traditionally been viewed as an ideal in patriarchal Western cultures because it is championed by men. However, women tend to look at morality through a lens of relationships, compassion, and responsibility to others. This â€Å"ethics of care† has often been overlooked because of the limited power women have typically held in Western societies. Gilligan illustrated this difference in the moral reasoning of males and females by articulating the thinking of a boy and a girl participants responses to the â€Å"Heinz dilemma† from Kohlberg’s studies. In this dilemma, a man named Heinz must choose whether or not to steal medicine he can’t afford to save the life of his dying wife. The boy participant believes Heinz should take the medicine because the right to life is more important than the right to property. On the other hand, the girl participant doesn’t believe Heinz should take the medicine because it could land him in jail for stealing, leaving his wife alone when she needs him. As this example demonstrates, the ethics of justice is impartial. Principles must always be applied in the same way, even if that means it negatively impacts the individual or someone they’re close to. On the other hand, the ethics of care is contextual. Morality isn’t based on abstract principles but on real relationships. Given these gender differences, Gilligan proposed that women don’t stop developing morally at lower levels than men, but that women’s moral development simply continues along a different trajectory than the ethics of justice measured by Kohlberg’s scale. Gilligan’s Stages of Moral Development Gilligan outlined her own stages of moral development based on an ethics of care. She used the same levels Kohlberg did but based her stages on interviews with women. Specifically, because Gilligan believed women’s morality arose from real-life dilemmas, not hypothetical ones, she interviewed women trying to decide whether or not to terminate a pregnancy. Her work yielded the following stages:   Stage 1: Pre-Conventional At the pre-conventional stage, women are focused on the self and emphasize their own self-interests over other considerations. Stage 2: Conventional At the conventional stage, women have come to focus on their responsibilities towards others. They are concerned with care for others and being selfless, but this position is defined by society or other people in the woman’s orbit. Stage 3: Post-Conventional At the highest stage of moral development, the post-conventional stage, a woman has learned to see herself and others as interdependent. These women have control of their lives and take responsibility for their decisions, a big part of which is the choice to care for others. Gilligan said that some women may not reach the highest stage of moral development. In addition, she didnt attach specific ages to her stages. However, she did claim that it wasnt experience that drove a woman through the stages, but cognitive ability and the woman’s evolving sense of self. Can the Ethics of Care Extend to Men? While the ethics of care was developed based on research with women, Gilligan has insisted that the ethics of care and the ethics of justice aren’t mutually exclusive. Instead of focusing on gender, Gilligan preferred to focus on the different themes brought up by these two perspectives on morality. Although this meant that men could develop an ethics of care, Gilligan indicated it was likely more common in women. Research by other scholars has backed up some of Gilligan’s assertions. On the one hand, studies have indicated that the gender differences on Kohlberg’s stages aren’t especially pronounced, suggesting that there may not be a strong gender-bias in Kohlberg’s work. On the other, studies have shown that people have two moral orientations that line up with Gilligan’s ethics of justice and ethics of care. And studies have found that the moral orientation towards care is stronger in females. Thus, while both men and women can and will develop both orientations, one may be more influential in men than in women and vice versa. Furthermore, research suggests that as people age and reach the highest stages of moral development, the two orientations may be more equally represented in the individual, regardless of gender. Critiques Despite the evidence for some of Gilligan’s ideas, they have also been criticized for a number of reasons. One critique states that Gilligan’s observations are the result of societal expectations of gender rather than differences that naturally arise from gender. Thus, if societal expectations were different, the moral orientations of males and females would also be different. In addition, feminist psychologists are divided over Gilligan’s work. While some have praised it, some have criticized it for reinforcing traditional notions of femininity that could continue to lock women into care-giver roles. Feminists have also pointed out that women are not a monolith. They argue that Gilligan’s work makes women’s voices seem homogenous, while denying their nuance and diversity. Sources Bell, Laura. Employing Typical Features of the Gothic Tradition in Frankenstein :: Gothic Mary Shelley Frankenstein Essays

Employing Typical Features of the Gothic Tradition in Frankenstein One question, which occurs to most whom have read the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelly is, which path does the novel follow? Is it that of the Classic Gothic, or of the Modern Gothic genre? Some consider Frankenstein, the first true Modern Gothic novel. Others may disagree; many people consider it a pure combination of Modern and Classic Gothic elements. You may also point out that Frankenstein does not depend entirely on the Gothic genre. Mary Shelly’s upbringing was a struggle. Her mother (Mary Wollstonecraft) died only eight days after her birth. Her father ignored her after traveling Europe with Percy Shelly. In 1815 Mary gave birth prematurely to a daughter who died soon after. In 1816 she gave birth to a young boy, William. This was the same year, which the book Frankenstein was born, and in it’s early stages. Later that year one of Mary’ half sister committed suicide. Two month’s later Percy Shelly’s wife (Harriet) drowned herself in the serpentine, Hyde Park. Both Mary’s children died soon after the publication of Frankenstein. Should Animal Rights Activists Be Held Accountable for Abuse Videos? Essay

The animal rights discourse is one of the structural characteristics of modern rational pluralism as well as one of the ironically legitimate discourses of post-modern civilization. From a sympathetic understanding point of view, we should elucidate Tom Reagan’s strong point of view and Mary Anne Warren’s weak point of view regarding animal rights. It is in our nature to uncover the limits as well as legitimize the value appeals of animals and indicate that we can clarify our duties by taking the discussion of animal rights seriously. Therefore, indeed, animals have rights so along as they live, breath and walk among us. There is much debate as to whether non-human animals should be awarded rights and to what extent these rights reach. However, there is much less disagreement in accepting that indeed animals do have rights, as opposed to the opposite. The line between animal and human rights is not unclear like most simple minds tend to reason. A line is drawn and it includes factors that cannot be ignored at all. Simple minds do not understand that the very essence of animals living and breathing as well as walking among us is that we are just like them, only that we are more evolved. Quite strangely, sometimes in this life you will find individuals who are no better than the creatures they deny rights. Although the idea for animal rights dates back to the 18th century, it has only become something more or less of a cause caliber among several well-placed intellectuals and philosophers. Jeremy Bentham seems to have put animal rights on the legal map by requiring the humane treatment of animals. It is important to note that Jeremy in his arguments does not support animal rights per se. In the book â€Å"the case for animal rights† (UC press, 1983), the idea of animal rights is found to be intellectually congenial but the idea extends to placing animals close to humans in the evolutionary cycle. Times that are more recent have brought to light a different tradition, namely, the utilitarianism. The emergence of animal liberation emerged with a big bang. The concept is the same but the argument has been tweaked a little bit to cover the idea of animal rights in general. The scope does not propose animal domination, but rather the animals are well off in their lives. The essay will maintain that animals have rights and have a need to be liberated. We will argue that another point of view from this is a mistake. Philosophers have avoided arguing that not all non-human animals should have rights for two major reasons. The first is because the consequences of doing so are limiting for humanity. The second reason is that the granting of such rights to creatures so simple makes the idea of granting them such rights seem to lack sense. One such leading author restricts such rights to mentally healthy animals, which are then referred to as ‘adult animals’ (Pallota, 20). Therefore, the argument is presented in three simple facts. The first is that human beings have rights; the second fact is that there is no moral difference between humans and adult animals and the third one indicates that the adult animals should have rights, as well. The main argument for this is that both human beings and adult mammals are subject of life. This means that there are several factors that liken all mammals without putting one on a pedestal. The factors include; both are similar in terms of biological complexity, they are both aware of their existence. In addition, they know what’s happening to them, they prefer some things to others, they make conscious choices, they try to plan their lives, and finally that the length of their life matters to them. Just like human beings, being the subject of a life means that we are of inherent value. Inherent value is not measured in how useful we are in the world and as well, it does not diminish if they are a burden to others. Therefore, adult animals should be afforded rights just as humans. In this lifetime, we cannot all agree on the same thing no matter how irrefutable your facts are. In the case of animal rights, there are more than a few arguments put forward. Some of these reasons include said facts such as; they do not think they are not conscious; they were put on this earth to serve man. In addition, they have no souls, they do not behave morally, they are not members of a moral community, they lack the capacity of free judgment and finally, they do not think. For instance, St. Thomas Aquinas records that animals respond to instinct while humans engage in rational thought. This is oddly debatable because there are some humans who do not listen nor react to reason. An article in the New York Times dated 5th April 2012 states that providing animals with rights is c categorical mistake in the philosophy. It also states, â€Å"Eagerness to treat animals kindly does not justify imposing one’s hopes and dreams for them on humans† (Tibor, 12). Religion, on the other hand, teaches that it is only human beings with souls should deserve ethical considerations. Since non-human animals have no soul, then they are not entitled to having any moral rights. This argument is not useful because there are many controversies in the concept of a soul. It is not humanly possible to establish the existence of a soul in human beings or animals in a definitive experimental manner. In conclusion, it is only sane and morally right to remember that it is in the nature of man to uncover the limits and at the same time legitimize the value appeals of non- human animals. It is only morally right to take animal rights seriously so long as we walk breath and live on this earth with the animals. Animals deserve the decency of clean habitats, food, water and medication. It is their right as dictated by nature, long before man made up his own rules that seeks to make him superior to any other being on this planet. Animals used to roam the earth long before man became civilized and they had their own rules. Man and animal might have had a few run-ins, but we lived together. Unlike the simple minds who might think that we are referring to constitutional rights, animals deserve to live comfortably like nature intended for man and animal to co-exist. What matters is that we understand and treat the animals with humanity, after all, only humans can show humanity. As they say, we are all insane, what differentiates us is the level of insanity. In the same respect, we are all animals, what separates us is the level of evolution. References â€Å"Animal Rights Debate.† BBC News. BBC, n.d. The Rise Of Personal Computers On The Workplace - 1259 Words

The rise of personal computers in the workplace has been very dramatic since their general introduction many years ago. The computing industry is unique in that it is continuously improving in a never ending effort for enhanced productivity and ultimate portability. From the first personal computer, the space hogging IBM 610, to the random mix of smartphones, tablets, two-in-ones, laptops, and desktops of today, that mission continues to refine and polish the idea of the personal computer in an effort to create and re-create the most versatile platform for getting things done. Since the time of the now incredibly obsolete 610, IBM and many other companies have needed intense research, dramatic reorganizations, extreme designs, and their subsequent successes and failures to find what will be the â€Å"next big thing† in the world of personal computers. As the devices and services that people use change, so do the jobs of people who manage and service them. An excellent example of this process is in the work of Jon Bjorkstrand, current Plant Systems and Network Administrator for ConAgra Foods. He is currently responsible for the network operations at two of ConAgra’s Lamb Weston plants, and supports operations at eighteen other ConAgra plants. Bjorkstrand began working for ConAgra at the R. D. Offutt plant in Park Rapids, MN in 1996, where the current corporate I.T. group had instituted Novell NetWare servers.
